Dairy Food and Immune Function

The role of nutrition on immune function and systemic inflammation has garnered renewed attention. Research has generally shown that healthy dietary patterns and specific nutrients (e.g., vitamin D, zinc, selenium) are associated with enhanced immune function. However, scientific studies evaluating the effects of dairy foods themselves on immune function are scarce. Research is needed that examines potential differential responses across different dairy foods and whether certain dairy foods exhibit unique effects on immune function (e.g., full-fat vs. low-fat dairy foods; fermented dairy foods; dairy ingredients and bioactives). Therefore, National Dairy Council is seeking pre-proposal applications that examine the impact of dairy food or ingredient consumption on immune function, including inflammatory responses related to immune system activation. Pre-proposals can include short-term dietary interventions, prospective observational studies, and/or suitable animal or cell culture studies.
